Sky High Thrills!
The Cliffhanger Roller Coaster in Glenwood Springs, Colorado is the highest elevation, full-sized Roller Coaster in North America.
Fifty feet tall, perched at an altitude of 7,160 feet and hugging the side of Iron Mountain, the Cliffhanger edges out all other coasters on the continent. A crowd-pleaser, its cliff-side curves and heart-stopping drop offs make it a must-ride attraction for coaster aficionados and thrill-seekers. From the ride’s pinnacle are views of the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon, 1,450 feet below!
Fun fact. The Cliffhanger Roller Coaster opened at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park on June 15, 2012. The Italian-made coaster was purchased from an amusement park in Branson, Missouri. To reassemble it required 1,400 new bolts, including 700 special bolts, 14 inches long with metric threads, used to hold the sections of track together. The same weekend the Cliffhanger debuted, the Mine Wheel, a ferris wheel ride also opened at the park.

- Braved the roller coasters. Defiance was about a 54-second rush! Loved the Alpine ride! The gondola ride to and from offered breathtaking views!read moreread lessCharla B11/03/2023Always a crowd-pleaser–visited with an extended family group with ages ranging from 2-70. Everyone had a great time with lots of options for the elementary-aged kids, the grandparents, and more challenging attractions for the group in their 20’s. After our gondola ride up, we all enjoyed several trips on the Alpine Coaster–always a thrill! The 20’s -30’s group set off for a previously scheduled “Wild Tour” while the over 60+ group stayed with the kids. We alternated between the 2 caves tours–always informative & engaging as they are led by guides who truly love what they do–and a multitude of age-appropriate attractions for the kids, including laser tag, fossil digging, both smaller roller coasters, a small Ferris wheel and pictures with the trolls after a troll hunt. It was so nice to be able to say “yes” to everything the kids wanted to do with a Fun Day pass. After we reunited with the Wild Tour group, we had plenty of time to explore the Canyon Swing, Defiance, Crystal Tower and the Tree Swings together. The staff is always attentive and friendly and the park is just the right size to explore fully in a day. Even the rest stops in the central plaza were pleasant with live music, convenient restrooms, water bottle refill stations and sunblock. Highly recommended that you spend a day here. The two coaster and, in particular, the Alpine Slide, were thrilling! But the entire place is so lovely and delightful, a very different experience from most amusement parks. You don’t have to be a fan of rides to go. Just a ride up the gondola and a walk around the small park is worth it. And there are “family friendly” rides as well. The staff is incredible… friendly, helpful and everyone seems happy just to be there. The food I had was very good. I can’t wait to go back.read moreread lessTom P9/09/2023
- We have vacationed in different parts of Colorado a few times over the years, but this was far and away my favorite thing that we have done while there. Such a neat experience. The rollercoasters were fun, the restaurant was great, the cave tours were a relaxing way to get out of the heat for a little while, and the staff were all so friendly. We did go during the week so that may play into it a little bit, but the waits were not bad at all, the most that we had to wait was for the mountain coaster and even that was only around 20 minutes. Even just the gondola ride up to the top is a fun experience. We will definitely be back.read moreread lessPeyton Davis9/06/2023
